Meet your coach
Sara Close is the Founder and Head Coach of the Business of Beauty. She is the Owner and Operator of two thriving beauty businesses in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Capelli Salon and Hey Barber GR. Sara has been a salon owner for over 20 years and has worked as a hair stylist for 26 years. Sara started The Business of Beauty to help other salon owners learn from her past mistakes, offer support, and create a culture of caring, acceptance, and understanding in the world of beauty. Sara cares deeply about her team and community, pouring back into them as she does with her salon clients.

The average lifespan of a privately owned salon is less than five years. Why is that? I believe it’s because as creatives in the hair industry, our schooling doesn’t often cover how to run a business. Most of us are doing this career because it’s something we love. When I started my business 20 years ago, I didn’t know how to create a budget, predict cash flow, implement a marketing strategy, or identify red flags before they caught on fire. Add human resources and management on top of that? Whew, there’s a lot to learn.
In my 20 years of salon ownership, I’ve been through a pandemic, layoffs, staff walkouts, pay cuts, a million mistakes, marketing snafus, cash-flow issues, product switches, burnout, client issues, and everything in between. I really have seen it all! And I have a successful salon and barbershop to show for my years of dedication and hard work.
